Educate yourself, read more.
I spend a lot of time travelling back and forth on trains, which means I have a lot of spare time on my hands! One of the best things about this is that I have time to read all the wonderful design books I have. Reading books on your subject is one of the best things you can do for yourself outside of education. Now we all know that University give us a reading list that the majority of us ignore...but believe me, there are always some gems to read! Now I'm not talking about the theory based books that send us to sleep. Don't get me wrong they have value, but I suggest you spend your time reading books like 'Know Your Onions' by Drew De Soto. This book puts years of Graphic Design experience into one book. There are endless tips that you don't get taught in University that you only find in practice.
I went into Waterstones the other day, and spend a good half an hour looking through the books in the design section, and there are so many great books. One of them was called 'New Modernist Type' by Steven Heller, whilst giving you plenty of beautiful illustrations to look at, it also had some interesting design history to it. If you are interested in typography and modernism, definitely take a look.
So go pick up a book and start reading!
